Captain Blistermint Chase a Technicolor Summer on “The Ladder”

The Auckland Band Fuse 90s Alt-Rock Crunch With 60s Bubblegum Pop Hooks

Out of Auckland, New Zealand, Captain Blistermint spend The Ladder welding the raw crunch of 90s alternative rock to the bright, sing-along pull of 60s bubblegum pop. The band describe the result as a vintage technicolor feel, the bright-eyed rush that scores a drive with the windows down and nowhere in particular to be. First released in June 2025, the single has held its place with listeners across the US, UK and Australia. A year on, it doubles as the opening statement for a forthcoming EP.

Captain Blistermint Fold 60s Bubblegum Pop Into 90s Alternative Rock

Two eras share the same three minutes here. The guitars carry the fuzz and forward push of 90s alternative rock. The melody leans on the major-key sweetness that 60s radio pop built its hits on. Critics reaching for a shorthand landed on “brand new and strangely familiar,” and that tension is the whole appeal. The chord shapes feel worn-in and comfortable, yet the delivery stays bright and current. There is a real subject beneath the shine, too: the song follows a couple through connection, loss and reconnection, and lands on hope rather than heartbreak.

That blend places Captain Blistermint in good company. The summer-facing warmth recalls The Beach Boys, whose stacked harmonies once turned open roads and coastlines into pop’s default daydream. The crunch and the oversized hook-writing sit closer to Weezer. That band spent the 90s proving distortion and a big sing-along chorus are not opposites. Obscure Sound heard the same pull, praising the jangling guitars and radiant vocal delivery that give the track its lift.

A Tight, Near-Tribal Rhythm Section and Vocals That Play It Sincere

Underneath the colour, the playing is disciplined. The rhythm section locks in with a tight, near-tribal insistence, drums and bass moving as a single unit rather than trading space, and that steadiness gives the hooks something firm to bounce off. It is the kind of low-end pulse that makes a mid-tempo song feel like it is travelling faster than it really is.

The vocals stay sincere rather than showy, delivered with enough plain-spoken warmth to keep the bigger moments grounded. Nothing is oversung, so the melody carries the weight instead of the performance straining for it. Writing for Indie Dock Music Blog, one reviewer picked out the thoughtful verses and cascading drums that open the door for the chorus. Put together, it reads as the work of a band that has logged real hours in a room. The single lands as a finished arrangement rather than a promising sketch.

Big Hooks Built for Teen-Movie Summers, Open Roads and College Radio

The Ladder is built to be sung back. The chorus arrives quickly and stays, the sort of melody that answers a second listen with a third. That immediacy is why the track travels well past any single scene or format. It suits a summer playlist and a road-trip queue with the tank full. College radio takes to it too, the format where indie rock still sits closest to its fans. Review Zoo filed it under exactly that kind of feel-good indie rock when they covered the single.

There is a genuine sense of summer and freedom in the arrangement, the open-road feeling the band keep returning to, and it never tips into cynicism. Most singles get a fortnight of attention and then slip down the feed; The Ladder has done the opposite, holding steady with listeners a year after its June 2025 debut. A hook this direct does not date quickly, and the 60s pop DNA gives it a familiarity that keeps pulling new ears back. Re-introducing a proven song, rather than chasing a brand-new release cycle, is a smart move. The track already knows how to win a room.

Captain Blistermint Take Their Auckland Live Show Toward a Forthcoming EP

The Ladder did not arrive in isolation. It stands as the lead single from Captain Blistermint’s forthcoming EP. It follows a steady run of releases and regular live shows around the Auckland scene. That working rhythm of writing, releasing and playing live is what keeps a catalogue single like this one in circulation a year after its debut. Edgar Allan Poets counted it among the single’s out-now highlights when they featured the release.

New Zealand has a long habit of exporting sharp guitar-pop bands, and on this evidence Captain Blistermint want a place in that line. The forthcoming record is the next rung, and The Ladder makes a persuasive case for following them up it.

IndieRock.News’s curator team: “What earns ‘The Ladder’ a slot in our rotation is the discipline underneath the sugar. The rhythm section keeps that near-tribal snap while the chorus goes full technicolor, and holding those two things in balance is harder than the breezy result ever lets on.”

Keep up with Captain Blistermint across platforms: Bandcamp, YouTube, YouTube Music, Instagram, and Facebook.
