A Raleigh and Columbus Duo, a Virtual Drummer and a Triangle Live Band

Guitars first, then a bass line that will not sit still, then two voices in harmony over the top. That is the opening of The Side of the Road. It starts They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars, the October 2024 debut album from You Me & Kyle. The indie rock duo of Tony Sharpe and Henry Hutton made it apart, from home studios in Columbus, Ohio and Raleigh, North Carolina.

You Me & Kyle’s Flying Cars now sits in the playlist below, and their artist profile holds the full run of coverage. They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts. That programme verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Hit play, then stay with us for the story of a band split across 500 miles.

You Me & Kyle Grew Out of a Decade With The Executives on the North Carolina Live Circuit

The story starts with a joke that turns out not to be one. Sharpe and Hutton met at a Star Trek convention when Sharpe was 16. In a 2026 interview with the North Carolina webzine Blank Tapes, Sharpe stressed that this is not a joke.

From there came a run of bands, from Greensboro to college dorms. Then came more than a decade as The Executives. The duo’s own YouTube channel calls that group one of North Carolina’s favourite live rock bands. Guitarist Rudy Mullins and drummer Steve Worrell completed the line-up. Its last show, as Sharpe remembers it, came around 2021 at a festival in Greensboro.

What changed next will be familiar to any band from the pre-laptop era. Back then, studio time cost more than The Executives could afford, even with gigs paying most of Sharpe’s college fees. Home recording was possible, but it never sounded right.

Now Logic Pro and a decent home setup close that gap. So the pair write in their own rooms and send parts back and forth. Each track gets built from both ends. In fact, Songweb reported that the files travelled over iCloud.

Sharpe settled in Columbus after spells in Atlanta, Kansas City and Chicago, and built a studio at home. Meanwhile, Hutton runs a second studio in Raleigh. An engineer handles the mix. The masters are then done in Chicago before each release.

Why Their Drummer Is a Robot and What the Eight Songs Do

The name needs explaining, and the band’s own site admits as much. Logic Pro X ships with a virtual drummer in several personas, and one of them is called Kyle. Hutton leaned on Kyle for demo after demo. As Sharpe tells it, Hutton remarked after The Executives ended that it was just the two of them and Kyle now. The band had its name. Kyle has since been promoted to robot and third member.

They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars runs to eight songs and 26 minutes. It came out on 15 October 2024 through Middle Class Productions, an independent artists’ label. Sharpe’s own tag for the sound is indie, alt-rock, pop punk, whatever. In other words, it refuses a single box.

The Side of the Road was the first song written for the project. It set the voice for everything after it: a hooky rocker about killing time on the side of the road. Meanwhile, Flying Cars turns the album title into a wry look at the future promised to them as kids. June 23 then slows into a stripped-back ballad after a breakup. Finally, Let You Down closes on a riff that keeps returning with more tension each time.

The Reviews Landed in March 2025 and a Live Band Followed

The reviews arrived in March 2025. Obscure Sound praised the hooky mix of power pop and rock. Pitch Perfect called it a confident debut, and Hella Fuzz heard plenty of humour in it. This desk also covered the album that month in an earlier feature.

Since then, the bedroom project has become a working band. Sharpe recruited Chapel Hill guitarist Rainer Ng and drummer Bill Goodwin, with Hutton on bass. The four have played Slim’s, Neptune’s and Bond Brothers Eastside. Kyle, as the band’s Facebook page puts it, will not play in public. So Goodwin takes the kit.

Where You Me & Kyle Sit Between Superchunk, Wet Leg and Destroy Boys

The Triangle has been a guitar town since members of Superchunk founded Merge Records in Chapel Hill in 1989. That scrappy, hook-first tradition suits a band now playing Raleigh rooms. You Me & Kyle share its habit of putting a big chorus on top of a busy rhythm section.

The newer reference points come from the band themselves. Sharpe told Blank Tapes that Wet Leg and Destroy Boys are on rotation lately. Similarly, Beach House reached for the same two names in its review. Wet Leg built a career on deadpan hooks and wiry guitars. Destroy Boys, by contrast, bring a punk drive that suits the record’s shout-along moments, Running Away among them.

That makes this album a fit for listeners who like indie rock with a pop punk bounce and some humour. It also suits curators building playlists of independent guitar bands that still write a proper chorus. And it suits anyone who has kept a band going with a friend across 500 miles.

Four singles have followed the album. The latest, Love You More, has been on Spotify since May 2026. The next chapter is already under way.

From the IndieRock.News Curator Team: “Listen to the bass on They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars. Henry Hutton keeps it moving under every chorus. That restlessness lets two home studios 500 miles apart sound like one band in one room.”
