Long Island Band Weld Grunge Drive to Indie Rock Melody on Catalogue Track

Loud guitars, a melody underneath them, and no interest in tidying either one up. unplug went out on 8 July 2023, and The Space Turtles have not needed to revise it since. The Long Island band built the track from grunge drive and indie rock songwriting. Three years on, it still does the job it was made for.

The Space Turtles are in the playlist below, and the band’s artist profile tracks what came after. unplug holds certification from PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Play it loud, let it finish, then carry on down this page.

The Space Turtles Built Unplug on Grunge Drive and Indie Rock Melody

Grunge and indie rock pull in slightly different directions. Grunge wants weight, distortion and a certain amount of mess. Indie rock wants a hook you can carry around afterwards. Bands chasing only the first end up shapeless, and bands chasing only the second end up thin.

unplug takes both. The aggression is real, the classic rock foundations underneath keep the arrangement upright, and the melodic writing stops the whole thing collapsing into noise. That balance is the signature of The Space Turtles, and it is why the track reads as a rock song rather than a genre exercise.

The band describe themselves plainly. Punk rock from Long Island, New York, and, in their own words, “everything sucks, might as well have some fun.” That attitude is audible. The record is heavy without being self-serious, which is a harder tone to land than either extreme.

Why a 2023 Catalogue Track Still Earns a Place in Rotation

Most independent singles get a fortnight of attention and then vanish into a back catalogue nobody visits. unplug has done better, and the reason is construction rather than luck.

The song is not built on a production trend, so there is nothing in it to date. Fuzz guitar, a real drum performance and a chorus that resolves properly were not fashionable in 2023, and they are not unfashionable now. That puts the track outside the usual cycle entirely.

Coverage has followed. Tape Ranger gave the band a full artist spotlight, and the single has kept surfacing on discovery lists since release. For a self-releasing act, that sort of slow accumulation matters more than a launch-week spike.

Three Bands That Map the Territory Unplug Works In

Three reference points place it. Pixies come first, because they wrote the template. Loud-quiet-loud as a structural device, delivered on Doolittle, is the reason a song can be abrasive and catchy in the same bar, and unplug runs on that logic.

Nirvana are the obvious grunge anchor, and specifically the part of Nirvana that was a pop band underneath the distortion. Kurt Cobain buried real melodies inside enormous guitars, which is exactly what this band attempt.

Finally, Dinosaur Jr. complete the set. J Mascis proved a guitar tone can be punishing while the song underneath stays gentle, and that contradiction is the indie rock half of the equation here. Anyone who keeps those three in rotation will find unplug immediately legible.

What the Band Sound Like When the Volume Comes Down

The title is worth a second look. unplug suggests stripping back, yet the track never goes acoustic, and that tension is the joke and the point at once.

IndieRock.News curator team: “unplug holds up because the band never confuse volume with intensity. The loud sections earn their weight by contrast with what sits around them, and that arrangement instinct is what separates a rock band from a distortion pedal with a rhythm section.”

Their wider catalogue backs that up. The Sweat record shows the same instincts across a longer run, and the band have kept releasing rather than resting on one track.

That is also the honest case for revisiting a catalogue track at all. A back catalogue is not a museum for an independent band, it is the working evidence of what they do. So a song from 2023 tells a listener more than a press biography can, and anyone arriving through unplug gets an accurate first impression.

Where to Stream Unplug and Follow The Space Turtles Online

unplug is on the major services. Play it on Spotify, then dig through the catalogue on Bandcamp, where the Sweat record lives.

For everything else, they post on Instagram and Facebook. A YouTube channel runs alongside both, and every current link sits on their official website and their Linktree.
