A Boston Open-Mic Graduate Brings ’90s Alt-Rock Melody to Vermont Barns and Cider Houses

Ryan Sweezey released Maybe Magic, a 10-track melodic alt-rock album, on 10 October 2025. A year on, Sweezey is still working the Vermont circuit that shaped it. This week included a solo acoustic set at Maquam Barn & Winery in Milton, and another follows at Stowe Cider on Saturday 24 October.

Ryan Sweezey’s title track Maybe Magic sits in the playlist below, and the songwriter’s run of coverage is collected on the Ryan Sweezey artist profile. The album came to IndieRock.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Listen to it first, then keep reading for the scene around it.

From Boston Open Mics to Vermont Barn Shows, the ’90s Alt-Rock Radio Sound Finds a New Home

Start with the wave. In the late 1990s, American rock radio ran on melodic alternative bands. They put acoustic guitars and confessional lyrics at the centre of full-band records. The Goo Goo Dolls made the template famous with Dizzy Up the Girl in 1998 and the strummed ballad Iris. Sweezey names the band among the ’90s and early-2000s alt-rock acts that widened a young listener’s taste.

That taste started at home on the North Shore of Massachusetts, just outside Boston. According to Sweezey’s own account, a father’s love of Jimmy Buffett came first, then concerts by The Rolling Stones, The Who and Tom Petty. Guitar lessons began at 12, and the first public performance was Bruce Springsteen’s Growin’ Up at a high-school coffee house.

The apprenticeship was pure New England. Sweezey minored in music at Northeastern University, sang in an a cappella group and played a first paid gig at a bar called Harrington’s at 19. After that came the Boston singer-songwriter circuit, with open mics around Cambridge and Somerville.

Then, in 2016, came Vermont. The move started as a break from music and a full-time job. Instead, it became a second career built one show at a time, peaking at nearly 100 shows a year alongside the day job. These days the count is lower, but Sweezey still plays dozens of shows a year across Vermont and New England.

Where Maybe Magic Fits in That Lineage, From Lady Nomad to the Title Track and the Midnight Walkers

Maybe Magic is the sixth studio album in that run, and it sits squarely in the ’90s radio lineage. The record runs to ten songs and about 36 minutes, opening with Lady Nomad and closing on the title track. Along the way, titles such as Controlled Chaos and Sleepless Nights tell you what keeps the narrator up at night.

The website bills the music as honest alternative rock for hopeful overthinkers, and that is a fair description of the record’s subject matter. The songs deal with relationships, uncertainty and restless thoughts, and they pair those lyrics with guitar-driven arrangements and hooks built for a chorus.

This time Sweezey also co-produced. That is a step up from the earliest albums, No Hollywood Star and Fall. Live, the songs have two shapes. Solo, they arrive as acoustic sets like this week’s barn and cider-house dates. With the full band, the bill reads Ryan Sweezey and the Midnight Walkers, an outfit formed in 2022 for the release show of the previous album, Out Searching. Sweezey is also an eight-time New England Music Awards nominee.

Goo Goo Dolls, Dispatch and Guster Draw the Map Around Maybe Magic and Its Hopeful Overthinkers

The adjacent acts explain the scene this album lives in. The Goo Goo Dolls are the obvious first neighbour. Their late-1990s run proved that a rock band could build its biggest songs around an acoustic guitar and an anxious, open lyric. Maybe Magic runs on that same balance between full-band songs and acoustic textures.

Dispatch is the Vermont neighbour. The band formed at Middlebury College in the 1990s and built a following on folk-rock and relentless live shows rather than radio. Sweezey’s career is smaller in scale, but the method is familiar: play the room, then play the next one.

Guster completes the triangle. Formed at Tufts University near Boston in 1991, the band leaned on acoustic guitars and hand percussion and became a fixture of the same New England circuit Sweezey came up through. Its melodic, slightly wry pop-rock is close kin to the hooks here.

Who Should Press Play on Maybe Magic, From Dizzy Up the Girl Loyalists to Somerville Open-Mic Regulars

This album suits listeners who still keep Dizzy Up the Girl within reach, and who like their rock songs to admit a little worry. If you prefer your alt-rock melodic, mid-tempo and lyric-first, Maybe Magic is built for you. It also makes sense if you ever spent a Thursday night at a Somerville open mic.

From the IndieRock.News curator team: “Maybe Magic sounds like an album made by someone who plays nearly two shows a week. The choruses are built for a room that is half listening, and the verses reward the half that is.”
