Sam’s Town Comes Back at 45rpm, Limited to 4,000 Copies

Sam's Town Comes Back at 45rpm, Limited to 4,000 Copies

Twenty years ago The Killers came home to Las Vegas after the long run behind Hot Fuss and made a record that sounded like it wanted the whole desert to hear it: bigger guitars, a rhythm section built for arenas and Brandon Flowers singing as if the back row were a mile away. That record, Sam’s Town, is now getting a full anniversary treatment, and the headline format is a 45rpm double LP cut from the analog masters and limited to 4,000 numbered copies worldwide.

The band announced the editions on 2 October, and the details are the kind collectors read twice. Here is what is in the Sam’s Town anniversary run, how it was made, when it ships, and why the timing lands in a busy week for the band.

What the Sam’s Town Anniversary Run Includes

There are three formats. The flagship is the audiophile edition: two 180-gram LPs at 45rpm in a heavyweight gatefold jacket with an OBI strip and a 12-page booklet, numbered and limited to 4,000 copies worldwide, according to uDiscover Music. It also adds the bonus track “Peace of Mind”.

The second format is the one most fans will actually buy: a single 180-gram LP at 33rpm, pressed on Red Smoke vinyl. It is not a cheaper cut of the same record in the usual sense, because it uses the same mastering and the same cutting process as the audiophile pressing. The difference is speed and disc count, not the source.

The third is a 7-inch box set, the first ever made for Sam’s Town, limited to 2,000 copies. It collects the four singles from the album’s original era, “When You Were Young”, “Bones”, “Read My Mind” and “For Reasons Unknown”, each backed with its original B-side, plus a fifth single that pairs “Peace of Mind” with a mix of “Read My Mind” that has never been on vinyl before. The box is top-loading and comes with a folded 14-inch-by-14-inch poster.

Cut From the Analog Masters at Sterling Sound

The part of the announcement that will matter most to anyone with a decent turntable is the chain. Both LP editions were cut from the analog masters by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, as Consequence reported in its rundown of the formats, and uDiscover adds that the audiophile set was pressed at Optimal Media in Germany.

That matters because Sam’s Town is a dense record. It was produced by Flood and Alan Moulder, two producers known for wide, layered rock records, and its arrangements stack guitars, keyboards and backing vocals on top of a rhythm section that rarely lets up. Spreading that across four sides at 45rpm gives each side less music to carry, which is why collectors chase the format for records with this much going on.

The analog-master detail is also a statement of intent. Anniversary reissues do not always say where they start. This one names the engineer, the studio and the source, which is the information a buyer actually needs to judge it.

The Seven-Inch Box and a Mix Never Pressed Before

The singles box is the more sentimental object. Gathering “When You Were Young”, “Bones”, “Read My Mind” and “For Reasons Unknown” with their original B-sides puts the album’s whole singles campaign in one place, on the small format that suits a run of singles best, and for anyone who followed the band release by release in those years it is a neat way to have the era on one shelf.

The fifth disc is where the new material sits. “Peace of Mind” takes the A-side, and the flip is “Read My Mind (Like Rebel Diamonds Mix)”, a version that has never been released on vinyl until now. For one of the album’s best-known singles, a previously unpressed mix is the sort of detail that sells out a 2,000-copy run.

Only the box has a later ship date. The two LP editions are due on 27 November, while the 7-inch box follows on 29 January 2027. Pre-orders are open through the band’s official store links, and the editions are being released by Island Records.

Why Sam’s Town Still Matters to Indie Rock

It is easy to forget how big a swing Sam’s Town felt like at the time. The Killers made it at home in Las Vegas after the touring cycle for their debut, with Flood and Alan Moulder producing, and the result aimed squarely at the biggest rooms the band could imagine. Where the first album had been a run of tight, nervy singles, the second album reached for scale in every chorus.

The public followed. The album spent 42 weeks on the Billboard 200, according to uDiscover, and “When You Were Young” and “Read My Mind” have stayed in the band’s live sets ever since. Two decades on, the record reads like the template for everything the band did next: the big-room choruses, the earnest lyric sheet and the willingness to sound like a band that wants to be heard in a stadium rather than a basement.

For indie rock as a whole, it was also a marker of how far a band from that scene could travel. The Killers came up alongside the guitar bands that dominated mid-2000s indie playlists, and Sam’s Town was the moment one of them decided the indie disco was too small a room.

The Killers Return to the Singapore Grand Prix Stage

The reissue lands in a week when the band are back on a big stage. The Killers headline the Padang Stage in Zone 4 at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday 10 October, after the qualifying session, according to the event organisers. It is their first appearance on that stage in eight years, and the organisers say their last set there drew about 60,000 people.

They share the weekend’s bill with Lana Del Rey, who makes her Singapore debut on the same stage the following night, plus Janet Jackson, Mark Ronson, Zara Larsson, Goo Goo Dolls, Split Enz and others. Several ticket categories had already sold out by the time the line-up was completed. A race-weekend crowd is as much a passing audience as a fan audience, which suits a band whose best songs were written to win over exactly that kind of crowd.

For fans who cannot make it to Singapore, the setlist will be worth watching for how much of Sam’s Town makes the cut. An anniversary year usually brings deeper cuts out of storage, and a festival headline slot is the test of how many of them survive.

What Comes After the Anniversary

The bigger question is new music, and on that the band have been unusually clear. In January Brandon Flowers told fans in an Instagram Q&A that the next Killers album was most likely a 2027 release. “My best guess is that in 2027 you will get the best Killers record,” he said, as reported by Contactmusic.

In the meantime Flowers has been working on his own. He said at the time that he had two solo records complete, made in Nashville, and described them as “a departure for sure.” In June he announced Thrasher, a country-western album, with the single “Plans” arriving later that month. That leaves 2026 as a year of looking back for the band: the anniversary editions, a run of big shows and the singles box arriving in the new year.

Mid-2000s indie heroes have been busy this autumn more generally, from the Las Vegas band’s vinyl campaign to the comeback we covered when The Strokes waited six years and came back with nine songs. For The Killers, the anniversary gives the old songs a fresh pressing while the next chapter is still being written.

For collectors, the practical advice is simple. The audiophile set is capped at 4,000 numbered copies across the world and the singles box at 2,000, so anyone who wants Sam’s Town in its definitive form will want to order before the 27 November ship date rather than after it.
