Why a Louisville Songwriter’s Take on Ghosting Still Earns Repeat Listens Three Months On

The Carpe DMs single opens on a very modern dread: the message marked read and never answered. Zach Outman frames it with country-pop storytelling and crunchy alternative rock guitars. Released on 8 May 2026, it has kept picking up listeners since. So it is back in our rotation rather than filed away.

You can listen to our full playlist which contains the artist’s music, and know more about the artist’s work by scrolling down the page.

The Carpe DMs Single Puts Country-Pop Storytelling Against Crunchy Alternative Rock Guitars

Start with the arrangement, because that is where the joke stops being only a joke. A driving acoustic guitar anchors the track. Crunchy electric layers push in behind it and add momentum. Then the rhythm shifts. The song rises gradually into a beat borrowed from hip-hop production. A harmonic guitar riff arrives to carry the hook. Aksel Coe plays the drums, and the percussion never swamps the arrangement.

That combination explains why three genre tags stick to one song. The guitars come from Alt Rock Pop. Alt-Country supplies the phrasing and the storytelling instinct, while Alternative Pop keeps the structure tight. Plenty of records sold as genre-blending are really genre-switching. You get a country verse, a pop chorus, and a seam you can hear between them. Outman writes the other way round, so the country inflection sits inside the arrangement instead.

The result lands as immediate without being disposable. Parkett reached the same conclusion. Its review called the track polished without becoming sterile. The write-up also noted a restrained pulse that mirrors the uncertainty in the lyrics. That restraint matters. A song about being left on read could easily overplay its hand, although this one never does.

Why a May Release Is Still Finding New Listeners in Louisville and Beyond

Most singles get one week of attention and then join the back catalogue quietly. This one behaved differently. Since 8 May 2026 it has kept collecting listeners. That pattern is why it is being pushed back out rather than left to settle.

Outman has been direct about what he was after.

“Creating ‘Carpe DMs’ was about embracing the different facets of my musical identity,” he said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the song continue to find new listeners. I believe its enduring appeal comes from that genuine blend of styles.”

That explains the shelf life. A song written to sit in one lane ages with that lane. Because this one sits where three of them meet, it keeps arriving new to the next audience.

Geography helps as well. Outman was born and raised in St. Louis. He has been based in Louisville since 2016, a city with a stubborn independent scene. His catalogue runs back to the debut single Warning Label. So Carpe DMs arrives with some road behind it.

The subject matter does the rest of the work. Ghosting, unread messages and short-lived excitement are not niche concerns. Rather than complain about them, the song stays curious.

Who This Sits With, From Wilco to Kacey Musgraves and Noah Kahan

If your listening runs through Wilco, the arrangement logic will feel familiar. Wilco spent the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot years arranging country-rock instrumentation with pop logic. Even so, the records still sounded lived in. Outman works that same border on a three-minute scale.

Kacey Musgraves is the closer reference for the writing. She built a career on country songs that use wit as a delivery system. Meanwhile, Carpe DMs runs a similar trick on dating apps rather than small-town gossip.

Then there is Noah Kahan. He carried Americana songwriting into contemporary pop production and found a mainstream audience. Still, the acoustic backbone survived the crossing. Outman attempts something comparable, although he approaches from the alternative rock side.

IndieRock.News curator team: “Most genre-blend records pick a lane by the second chorus. Carpe DMs holds its country phrasing and its pop structure in balance throughout. That balance is why it survives a playlist instead of decorating one.”

The audience for this keeps several scenes open at once. For example, Lost In The Manor put the track in its pop picks and praised the wit of the title. Rock Era Magazine framed the whole thing as love in the age of read receipts. Both readings fit. American listeners are the core audience, especially those hunting new voices in alt-country and alternative pop.

Where to Hear the Carpe DMs Single and Follow Zach Outman Online

Carpe DMs has been on the major streaming services since release. So the player above is the quickest way in. Zillions Magazine called it energetic and easy to hold on to. That is a fair summary of what happens once the riff lands.

Keep up with Outman across platforms: Spotify, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, the YouTube channel, and SoundCloud. His official website is the direct line for booking and press enquiries.
