A Metro Detroit Studio Collective Brings Folk-Rock Harmonies and Motor City Guests to 2nd Chances

Two electric guitars trade lines over a steady bass and drums pocket. Then a gruff, easygoing lead vocal sits on top, and the harmonies fold in around the hook. That is Reluctant Prophets, the opening track on Happy Curmudgeons‘ second album 2nd Chances. Its music video is out now, so classic rock fans who like a live-room sound can start here.

Happy Curmudgeons have Reluctant Prophets in the playlist below. The band’s full coverage history sits on the Happy Curmudgeons artist profile. Reluctant Prophets came via PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Put the track on, then read on for where it sits in the wave.

The Golden-Era Folk-Rock Revival Has a Detroit Chapter, and Happy Curmudgeons Wrote Part of It

Right now, a steady run of independent bands is making records in the language of late-sixties and seventies rock. The guitars sound like amps, not plug-ins. Real singers stack the harmonies. And the songs stop when the song is done. Radio has noticed the appetite, too. For example, SiriusXM’s Underground Garage and Deep Tracks slot new songs beside the records that inspired them. Happy Curmudgeons have earned plays on both, plus The Loft, North Americana and BB King’s Bluesville.

Detroit has always been a players’ city, and that lineage runs straight through this record. Bill Skibbe mastered 2nd Chances at Third Man Records in Detroit. Spectra Music Group released the album on July 26, 2024, with a limited red vinyl pressing for crate-diggers. Good Music Radar heard the whole set as a throwback to the golden era of folk rock. That is a fair summary of where this band belongs.

Where Happy Curmudgeons Fit in Detroit’s New Classic Rock Wave

Dave Hamilton started Happy Curmudgeons in metro Detroit in 2015. From the start, the band worked as a collective of studio musicians rather than a fixed four-piece. The debut, Meant 2 Be, arrived in 2017 with eleven originals. 2nd Chances brings ten more, and its guest list reads like a map of rock history. It features Billy Cox of the Band of Gypsys and Bobby Balderrama of ? & The Mysterians. Jim Moose Brown from the Bob Seger band also turns up, along with Blue Note Records artist Dave McMurray. Pepe’ Espinosa, whose credits include B.B. King, completes the list.

Reluctant Prophets is where the album opens, and it is a two-guitar song in the truest sense. Dave Hamilton wrote it with guest guitarist Vaughn Mortimer, who also plays with The Outfit and Big Donut. Instead of splitting lead and rhythm, the pair share the guitar parts, as Diffusioni Musicali noted when the single arrived. Underneath, Takashi Iio on bass and Todd Glass on drums keep the groove even. Meanwhile, producer Mark Byerly keeps the arrangement lean, so the finished track lands full and punchy.

The writing holds up to close listening, too. The song opens on a line about having the patience of Job. After that, the reviewers at Sleeping Bag Studios counted five or six hooks in it. Other bands, they wrote, would have stretched each one into a whole song. The catalogue already has hardware to show for that craft. The band holds gold W.A.M. awards for the songs 2nd Chances and Rustic Glory, plus a silver for I Know How You Feel. It has also raised more than $3,000 for Music Beats Cancer.

The Classic Folk-Rock Company Reluctant Prophets Keeps

The nearest neighbours for this record sit at the folk-rock and roots-rock end of the classic rock shelf. Think first of The Byrds, whose chiming guitars and stacked vocals turned folk songs into rock records in the mid-sixties. Similarly, Reluctant Prophets lets the guitars and harmonies share the melody instead of leaving it to the lead vocal.

The Jayhawks are another useful reference point. Gary Louris and Mark Olson built an Americana catalogue on two voices blending into one. Likewise, the backing vocals here aim for that same seamless blend. Finally, for the engine room, look to Creedence Clearwater Revival. John Fogerty’s band kept songs short and the rhythm section locked. In the same way, Iio and Glass make sure this track wastes nothing.

So who is it for? It suits listeners who leave Deep Tracks on in the car. Record buyers who still flip an album at the end of side one will find plenty here, too. Above all, it is for anyone who wants new songs in the old style rather than another reissue.

The IndieRock.News curator team: “What sold us on Reluctant Prophets is the change of pressure in the vocal. The verses push forward with real weight. Then the hooks ease into a gentler harmony, and that release is why the chorus stays with you.”

Start with the video above, then give 2nd Chances a front-to-back listen. The opener sets the tone for a record that moves between folk, Americana and classic rock without losing the thread.
