In the piece “Whatever Afterglow,” the band captures the essence of post-rock, building up like a rogue wave ready to engulf the listener in a sonic embrace. This track, mixing seamlessly with the piano of Brian Sink, brings out a familiarity akin to bands like Neutral Milk Hotel. Their efforts in integrating cinematic elements within the track make it a stand-out piece, reflecting the versatile artistry they possess.
Stray Owls comprises three incredibly talented musicians: Jerry Kee, Scott Griffiths, and Matt French. Kee brings a multi-instrumental prowess to the table with drums, guitars, synthesizers, and even the xylophone. Griffiths shines with his blend of guitars, vocals, and field recordings, creating intricate weaves that hint at influences from Neil Young and the Kinks. Finally, Matt French adds depth with guitars, synthesizers, and piano. Their collective synergy is evident throughout the album’s intricate layers.
The track “Moonlight Shadows,” with Griffiths at the helm, is a nod to their earlier weirdo-folk influences, blending sounds reminiscent of Sebadoh and the Kinks. This piece stands out for its smooth transition from serene folk landscapes to fuzz-laden art rock, inviting comparisons to the indie rock aesthetics of the past while innovating for the future. “Elemental Static” features spoken word by Corbie Hill, adding a unique touch to the album’s experimental fabric.
