The Los Angeles Songwriter Joins the 90s Alt-Rock Revival From the Generation That Lived It

Fuzzed-out guitars carry Mediocre White Guy. The chorus lands as a gut punch aimed at one very specific kind of swagger. It is the third single from Perpetual Adolescence, the upcoming EP from jeanie, the Los Angeles project of songwriter Christy Lamb. It also lands midway through a 90s alt-rock revival that has shaped indie rock for most of this decade.

The music of jeanie is in the playlist below, and the jeanie artist profile collects her coverage so far. Mediocre White Guy came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Press play on the playlist, then read on for where the song sits in the 90s revival.

Mediocre White Guy Lands in a 90s Alt-Rock Revival Mostly Built by Younger Bands

The wave is easy to hear once you start listening for it. Over the last few years, a younger generation has rebuilt the sound from the outside in. Most of these artists were too young to buy the records the first time round. For example, beabadoobee leaned on loud, melodic 90s guitars for the 2020 debut album Fake It Flowers. Meanwhile Momma, who started out in Los Angeles, wore 90s alt-rock openly on Household Name in 2022. Both records treat distortion and a big chorus as a shared language rather than a period costume.

Most of that revival reaches the 90s second hand, through older siblings, inherited record shelves and streaming recommendations. As a result, the scene has its own character: affectionate, guitar-first and built around the sound of the era. It has also made a fuzz pedal feel current again, and that is the room Mediocre White Guy walks into.

Where jeanie Fits as a Songwriter Who Heard These Records the First Time

Mediocre White Guy comes at the same sound from the other direction. Lamb is 45, which puts her teenage years squarely inside the decade this music comes from. Yet she only started making music five years ago. Her songs blend 90s rock, alternative pop and classic rock. She writes for 90s nostalgics, and also for anyone ready to push for real-world change. So on this single, the fuzz is memory rather than research.

What places the song in 2026 rather than 1996 is its source material. The lyric draws on two writers. First, Sarah Hagi wrote a one-line prayer in 2015 for the confidence of a mediocre white man. People have quoted the line ever since. Then, in 2020, Ijeoma Oluo traced the same idea through American life in her book Mediocre. On her own website, Lamb frames the result as a song about a system rather than about hating men. In her telling, that system keeps some people small and leaves everyone else over-explaining. In other words, jeanie has a 2020s argument to wear in 1990s clothes.

Marc Orrell produced the take and Darren McCaughey mixed it, and they made it loud on purpose. Her earlier songs leaned on bittersweet melody. Here, though, the same sharp-witted honesty points outward, and a ballad would not have carried it. Distortion, a hook-driven arrangement and a chorus made for shouting back give the argument room to land.

The Breeders and Juliana Hatfield Sit Closest to Mediocre White Guy on a 90s Alt-Rock Shelf

On a shelf of the originals, Mediocre White Guy sits nearest to records that made fuzz and bluntness work as pop. The Breeders did exactly that with Cannonball in 1993. That song set a distorted vocal and a shouted hook over a bass riff simple enough to hum. Likewise, the new single’s gut-punch chorus works on the same principle: keep the guitars dirty and the payoff obvious.

Juliana Hatfield is the other close neighbour. In 1993 the Juliana Hatfield Three released My Sister, which put a plain, conversational lyric over loud guitars. It came from their debut album, Become What You Are. That plain-spoken directness is exactly what jeanie reaches for here. Neither comparison is about a borrowed riff. Instead, both are about a way of saying something pointed without dressing it up.

From the current wave, the song also pairs naturally with Momma and beabadoobee. That makes it an easy addition for listeners who found the 90s through those records. They get the decade’s attitude here, as well as its tone.

IndieRock.News’s curator team: “The fuzz is the easy part of the 90s to copy. Mediocre White Guy also brings back the bluntness by putting a pointed argument into a gut-punch chorus. That is what moves it from a nostalgia playlist into an indie rock one.”

Stream Mediocre White Guy and Follow jeanie From Los Angeles on Every Platform

This one is for listeners raised on 90s rock, alternative pop and classic rock. It is also for anyone who has read Hagi or Oluo and wanted a song to play afterwards. Younger fans of the revival who like their alt-rock with something to say should start here too. Play it loud, next to Cannonball, and let the chorus do the arguing.

Earlier singles have already drawn press attention. New Fire Magazine covered the debut in May 2025, and YouHearUs later chose an earlier single as a featured tune. Mediocre White Guy has been out since 28 August 2026. Besides the player above, it also streams on Apple Music and Tidal.
